When we moved into our new apartment we suddenly realised that we definitely didn't have enough furniture to fill it! Our previous home was furnished work accommodation so all we had was the few bits of furniture we had in storage from our tiny flat in the UK.
I don't like to overcrowd a room but all we had in the bedroom was a bed and a mirror! We decided that we didn't want to just rely on a trusty IKEA item, we wanted something we genuinely liked and would keep for the foreseeable future.
I'm a big fan of second hand furniture and when a friend of ours acquired this console table and put it up for sale, I knew it was a sign!
This console table was quite old and had a heavy layer of oil based paint on it, which took a lot to get off. If the paint is quite flat, you can just sand it down to get a key for the paint to 'stick to' and it will also give you a smoother finish.
The paint on this table however was very thick, very uneven and had started to peel in a few places, so it had to go!
After sanding down furniture, make sure you wipe off all the excess dust and clean it throughly as any dirt can affect the finish.
The paint I used was an Acrylic wood paint from Landi which I bought for about 12/13 Francs for 750ml, the paint can also be used on outdoor wood but I haven't tested that yet!
The colour of this paint is the perfect black, which is a rarity! Its a very deep and solid black and It only took 2 coats for the majority of the table with a few touch ups on the awkward parts.
This paint gives a great silk effect and dries very flat and even.
After the final coat had dried, I used a clear wax by Autentico which I bought from a little homeware boutique in France (pictured), details here!
The wax just gives it a little protection against use, simply brush it on thinly, wait a little while and brush off.
I'm a sucker for hidden details! So I lined the drawer with a vintage floral fabric I had lying around and now the drawer serves as a home for our jewellery and watches.
And I present to you, the console table, in all its glory!
Thank you for reading, and if you have any questions about this DIY, please feel free to post in the comments below!
