The Aare Gorge/Aareschlucht
I discovered Aare Gorge on Pinterest while I was looking for beautiful places to visit and I immediately knew that I had to go!
Saturday was the first nice, sunny day we've witnessed in a while so we took the opportunity and headed up to Meiringen to go and visit this natural beauty!
We parked at the West entrance, purchased our tickets (8.50 per adult) and headed up a little lane towards the gorge.
Located in The Haslital which is one of the largest valleys in the central Alps, it has been formed by the constant flowing of the Aare river over thousands of years. The gorge itself is 1400m long and 200m deep and has been passable for over 100 years and the route consists partly of cave passages and wooden paths along the mountain wall.
Inside the cave passages were quite dark and rather drippy! the outer paths were narrow and some parts were tricky to manoeuvre (I wouldn't recommend taking a pushchair).
The views were spectacular and the water was an incredible, cloudy aqua colour which is the standard in Switzerland!
The day we visited was the first day that the route was fully passable (the East entrance closes during the winter for much longer than the west) so we were excepting crowds, however it was so quiet I felt more as though I was on a tropical island!
The route took us about 40 minutes to reach the East entrance where there was a small cafe serving sandwiches, after a break we were able to go back down to the West entrance using the same ticket.
The walk back felt a lot shorter but was no less inspiring. I would 100000% recommend visiting Aare Gorge, especially if you have visitors staying, there is also a lot of interesting history along the way but I won't give out any spoilers!
I loved getting back to nature this weekend, what did you guys do?
Thanks for reading! Yasmin x
